Leisure in Seville
Spain is considered to be the main destination for university students taking part in the Erasmus programme. Of all the Spanish cities, Seville is one of the most in demand for various reasons: educational offer, climate, gastronomy, nightlife...
Partying in Seville
The university students in Seville usually frequent five large areas:
Alameda de Hercules: it is a large square lined with poplar trees near the Macarena neighbourhood. In fact, it is the largest public space in the old part of the city. It is estimated to have been built in the 16th century. At the southern end are two Roman columns with statues of Hercules and Julius Caesar. There are many restaurants, pubs and nightclubs around the square. There are also performances throughout the year.
-
Alfalfa: it is a neighbourhood located in the city centre. There are many pubs where Erasmus students usually meet. The establishments usually have very good offers to drink beers, wines and liquors.
Nervion: it is a modern neighbourhood with good transport links (underground and train station), and many restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. The prices are more expensive than in the previous areas. This neighbourhood is also home to several faculties: Economic Sciences, Tourism and Finance, Philosophy, Psychology, Law, Labour Sciences and Educational Sciences.
El Arenal: it is a neighbourhood located to the left bank of the Guadalquivir River in the centre of the city. Its name comes from the fact that it was a large open space covered with sand. This space was located between the now disappeared Triana Gate and the Torre del Oro. Much of the city's port activity was concentrated there. For this reason, the medieval building of the Atarazanas, the old shipyard, is located in the immediate vicinity. Nowadays, it offers a wide range of leisure activities: restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and live music.
-
Betis Street: it is a street next to the Guadalquivir River in the Triana neighbourhood. It runs from the Triana Bridge to the San Telmo Bridge. Its name comes from the old name of the river. There are pubs and nightclubs in this area. In addition, the Vela de Santa Ana is held from the 21st to the 26th of July. Between fifteen and twenty fair huts are set up to serve food and drink. There are also performances in Altozano Square. One of the most important traditions is the game of the cucaña, in which participants try to climb a greasy pole over the river to grab a small flag and win a prize.
